| | Why do you need to be casting 70 -120mts.If it's a unpressured water, i'd be looking at the shallower margins(if it has them) as this were all the natural food will be and the carp. |

| ..........depending on the cast .........chod rigs probably ,loaded with pellet ......or the method ,i dont think id be wanting to fish zigs at range or in very deep water ........ its a public lake , 35 acres , 30 odd feet deep with a huge drop right at your feet ........i plan on spending a week or so with the marker rod and do a little prebaiting , appart from that i am at a bit of a loss , any of the other places i have fished for carp have been alot smaller and shallower . It should be worth it as most of the fish come out at around 20lb and in a few years time could be some of the biggest in Ireland . so any advice on fishing the deep stuff as i am already competant in the margins or shallow water |

| I suggest you look for books/articles by Jim Gibbinson who fishes a lot of deep waters, or about Cassien (or other BIG continental waters) as that's a deep water and Carp are caught from all depths from marins to 50ft+. From what I can recall most articles tell you to fish different depths until you find the feeding depth. I doubt the water you are fishing is completely uniform in depth, there have to be some variations and you need to find these with your marker/plumb rod. A mate fishing a deep UK water had a big fish after seeing it roll, when he put the marker out he found it had rolled over a small 28ft plateau with 32ft all around it. Other points to note: In very deep water make sure you are using a VERY buoyant marker float and a VERY HEAVY lead or you will make mistakes with your depths. It would also be worth putting a couple of drops of washing-up liquid on your marker line to make sure it gets through the surface tension, and remember it can take a good while for a lead/marker float to reach the bottom in 30ft of water, make sure it has hit the bottom before you start letting off line. |

| thanks for the reading list Mark .........thats exactly the kind of info i am looking for i have just re-spooled my marker with braid and plan to do a bit of poking around on the bottom with a lead even before i attach a float . a baitboat with sonar would be a huge advantage on a place like this but i couldnt really warrant the expenditure for just one venue that i have only fished a couple of time so far and am still undecided if i like it or not . Assuming i can find a spot or two , how would the lads suggest i feed or prebait them .? I normally use quite a fine stick mix for most of my fishing , full of tiny pellet and powdered addits or if spodding, a mix of hemp, maples, and maize ..........my problem is how do i present this type of bait at depth...or should i try a different approach ...........boilie would be ideal , as its easy to get out there but i cant afford to feed 10-15kg at a time . |

| Baiting by spod or baitboat would be useless in 30ft of water as the bait could potentially spread out over a huge area so you're baited rig could be a long way from the freebies. You need something dense so I would suggest a groundbait that you can compress into balls so they sink better than loose feed. It doesn't have to be expensive for the Carp to like it, Vitalin (dry dogfood available in sacks from large pet stores) looks likes a great binder that you can add some bits & pieces to, make it up stodgy and catapult out in good-sized balls so it sinks as straight as anything can in that much water. PVA bags, method feeder, Korda stick would all be good presentation. Make sure you add some sort of oil to you mix, it should disperse to all levels of the water column as it rises, in theory attracting Carp down to your freebies+rig. Find a couple of likely spots, bait them once/twice a week with good quantities of cheap but effective feed and fish over them. If you can find a margin spot(s) with relatively shallow water (remember that could be 12ft against an average of 30ft) I would definitely concentrate a lot of effort on those areas. I think Gravel Pit Carping (Jim Gibbinson) has some chapters on tackling deep waters. Jim 'tracks' the Carp as they move up the shelves as the weather warms and back down as it gets cooler, all the time trying to find the optimum feeding depth. It's one of the best Carp books I have ever read (but then I am a big fan of Jim's work) |

| Are small dinghy's allowed on the water? Ideal for getting out there and searching the depths with an echo sounder and marking and baiting spots properly. _________________ "82% of Corkonians believe they are the chosen ones while 18% believe they are the ones who'll do the choosing".

| Took the words out of my mouth Paul! a boat & echo would be the way to go - locate features, bottom make up, depths and temp as there may be springs or hidden inlets. windward margins are probably the spots along with inlets/outlets, weed/reed beds etc.. catch em under your feet on the shelf, drop off or slope as this is where the natural larder is. bulk baiting wise approach it like a big water - locate your feature/s, mark them and bait up with good aul sweetcorn in big 3-5kg tins from a wholesaler liquidised (Toms trick) and whole with a bunch of other pulses eg. chick peas etc.. from your local Arab shop - dirt cheap. add in a few freebies of your chosen hookbait and your laughing. as the lads said you may well be standing on them.
